Overview

For those of us who are truly steeped in the history of Swiss watchmaking, the name Movado commands a special kind of respect. Long before their contemporary identity was forged, Movado was a true, vertically-integrated manufacture of the highest caliber, producing innovative and exceptionally well-made in-house movements that stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the very best in the world. This stunning automatic dress watch is a perfect and pristine example of that golden age.

During the 1960s, Movado was at the peak of its powers, and at the heart of their premier automatic watches was a family of fantastic in-house calibers. This watch is powered by the excellent Caliber 431, a top-tier engine that was also used in their flagship “Kingmatic” line. The “28 Jewels” printed on the dial was a clear and direct statement of quality; this high jewel count signified a robust, fully-jeweled automatic system designed for exceptional durability, stability, and a long service life. This wasn’t just a pretty face; it was a serious piece of Swiss engineering.

This particular example is a true time capsule, a stunningly preserved piece of 1960s elegance. The dial is a masterclass in clean, minimalist design—a beautiful silvered surface, graced with sharp, applied baton indices and classic dauphine hands. The proportions are perfect, the legibility is superb, and the overall aesthetic is one of timeless, understated confidence. Housed in a crisp stainless steel case with elegant, sharp lugs, it’s a design that looks as perfect today as it did when it first left the factory. What truly elevates this piece, however, is the fantastic and rare addition of its original, signed Movado mesh bracelet, which completes the authentic, period-perfect look.
